What is Jira Work Management?

Agile is gaining popularity. Non-technical teams start using tools like Jira Work Management to manage and simplifying their work. Jira Work Management, from Atlassian, is designed for non-IT teams such as HR, Accounting, Legal, Marketing, Finance, and other business teams. We will examine its unique features.

Jira Work Management is a newer product from Atlassian, specifically designed for non-IT teams. These include:

  • HR
  • Accounting
  • Legal, Marketing
  • Finance
  • and other business teams

How Jira Work Management is different from Jira Software

Jira is a tool for managing tasks and tracking project progress. Atlassian offers three versions of Jira:

  • Jira Software for developers
  • Jira Service Management for Service teams
  • and Jira Work Management for business teams

Using Jira across the organization allows for easy task sharing and status updates. Jira Work Management is tailored to the needs of non-technical teams, with a summary view for management to monitor progress across teams. It is similar to Jira Software, but with some distinct differences.

  • In Jira Work Management, issues are called 'Items' and can be moved between Jira products, while in Jira Software they are simply called 'issues'
  • Jira Work Management allows you to customize the color of your project, with 14 options available, while Jira Software and Jira Service Management only have the option of white
  • In Jira Work Management, you can choose to use pre-configured templates to set up the project, with workflow and issue types.
  • Jira Software and Jira Work Management offer Excel-like and board views with additional features, including quick filters, card colors, swimlanes, calendar planning, and dependency timelines. Jira Software focuses on lead and cycle time, while Jira Work Management focuses on tracking status. Jira Work Management also offers real-time collaboration feature, which is not available in Jira Software.

6 features in Jira Work Management that you don’t have in Jira Software

Jira Work Management offers additional features such as:

  • Summary page
  • List view
  • Calendar view
  • Board view
  • Timeline view
  • and Form builder

allowing for better project overview, in-line editing, scheduling, tracking, dependency management, and form-based data collection.

Jira Software or Jira Work Management?

You don't have to choose between the two!

Atlassian offers various excellent products, and while there may be some overlap, it's not essential to pick one over the other. Using Jira across all teams within the organization offers many advantages, such as having tasks and tickets in a single location, making it easy to share status across teams and move tasks between projects in JWM and JSW.

Jira Work Management is designed to provide useful views for non-technical teams, as business teams work differently and require distinct features than, say, software developers. In contrast, Jira Software is intended for software development teams, with advanced project management and development tools like agile boards, custom workflows, and Git integration.

Licensing is based on the user, so Jira Work Management users and Jira Software users can collaborate efficiently in one system. Ultimately, it depends on your team's specific needs and the types of projects you'll be working on to determine which product is the best fit for your organization.
